The value of application integration: Gmail Labs integrates Gmail, Calender and Documents
Without Gmail Labs from Google the Google Mail Beta user interface looks like this:
Gmail Labs was introduced in June 2008. The feature it offered were not seen by everyone as interesting: “Gmail labs is live but also boring”.
But the team behind Gmail Labs released some new features recently.
With those new Gmail Labs features enabled Google Mail looks like this:
The integration of the separated Google applications Calendar and Docs into the Google Mail user interface has proven in our seven days long practical test to be of good value. Gmail Labs is in our view now a great enhancement to Google Mail.

What could be one of the reasons why you can not find or access Google Labs in your Gmail ?
During our tests we found one problem where on one and the same machine we could work with the Labs feature in Firefox but in Internet Explorer the “Labs” tab was not available. Our speculation is that Internet Explorer Version 6 (at least the one installed on that machine) is not supported by the Gmail Labs features.

For our German readers a tip of how to enable those Labs features also in Germany:
Basically the Gmail Labs feature seems to be currently (November 2008) not available when you have “German” selected as language in the Google Mail settings. Switching to “English” should provide you with the “Labs” tab as it is shown in the screen shots above. After enabling the Gmail Labs features you are interested in you can switch back to “German” as your Google Mail UI language of choice. All Labs features continued to work in our tests after the switch back to “German”.

Damit Sie die Labs Features für Google Mail benutzen können (zumindest gilt dies im November 2008), stellen sie in Google Mail Einstellungen die Sprache auf “Englisch”. Dann erhalten sie als ein neues zusätzliches Tab (”Reiter”) “Labs”. Dort aktivieren Sie die oben aufgeführten Features. Vergessen Sie bitte nicht auf “Änderungen speichen” = “Save changes” zu klicken. Danach können Sie wieder auf “Deutsch” als Sprache umstellen. In unseren Tests funktionierten alle Labs Features auch nach der Umstellung auf “Deutsch” weiterhin.
