1) iPad as remote control for one specific application

2) iPad as remote key board and touchpad to control a nearby Mac or PC

3) iPad to access and control the remote Mac or PC

  • Software: “LogMeIn Ignition” from LogMeIn Inc.  https://secure.logmein.com/US/products/ignition/ ; good security to access your PC or Mac at home from your iPad via Internet
  • Software: http://splashtopremote.com/; currently to remote control only Windows PC´s (OSX remote control is in beta)  but unique because it is fast enough for video and sound (watch on iPad for example Flash movies running on the remote PC in Chrome as the  browser)

Finally the combination of 1), 2) and 3) together and our recommendation

Software: “Remote HD” http://www.remotehd.com/Windows/ (screenshot below); the all in one solution; currently unique because it allows to control iTunes on a remote PC/Mac and to stream the sound from the remote PC/Mac in good quality to the iPad. Two remarks:

  • it is unclear how good its security for remote access via Internet is
  • it can not stream video from your Mac/PC to your iPad

For secure access to your PC or Mac at home via Internet use LogMeIn, for watching video on your iPad from your Mac/PC use either Splashtop Remote or AirVideo or EyeTV (select based on your specific requirements, the differences are explained in this article).

AirVideo and EyeTV both stream video to your iPad; AirVideo streams a lot of different video formats without any hassle.

Thanks for the info! And did you hear some information about Actymac VidShots Remote? I know that it allows to
get video from Mac desktop to iPhone. May be it is very useful for remote
    parental control and employees watching.
